How to measure your aquarium volume
Measure the internal length and width, then measure the intended water depth in centimetres. Multiply these three measurements and divide by 1,000 to get litres. For example, a tank measuring 60 ร 30 ร 36 cm holds 64.8 litres when filled to that depth. A lower waterline reduces its capacity.
The volume shown here does not deduct the space occupied by substrate, stones, wood, or equipment. Use the net water volume calculator to estimate the water actually available when planning a water change or calculating a dose from a product label. When filling a new aquarium, recording the litres added gives a better reference than estimating displacement.
Using the glass thickness estimate
Glass thickness depends on tank height, panel dimensions, bracing, glass quality, and construction. This tool gives a preliminary estimate for comparing tank dimensions. Have a qualified aquarium builder check the panel sizes, joints, bracing, and support before ordering glass or assembling a tank. The weight estimate also needs allowance for substrate, rocks, equipment, and the stand itself.
Once your tank dimensions are decided, compare stocking options with the shrimp stocking calculator and plan maintenance with the water change calculator. Each tool uses different inputs, so use the measured water volume appropriate to the calculation.
