Amano Shrimp
Caridina multidentata
Named after the legendary aquascaper Takashi Amano, the Amano Shrimp is arguably the most effective algae-eating invertebrate in the aquarium hobby. These robust, transparent-to-grey shrimp are significantly larger than Neocaridina and possess a ravenous appetite for hair algae, thread algae, and decaying plant matter. They are an essential part of the 'cleanup crew' in almost all professional planted tanks. Amanos are extremely hardy and adapt to a wide range of water parameters, making them perfect for beginners. While they will constantly develop carrying eggs (becoming 'berried'), they will not successfully multiply in freshwater, as their larvae require brackish/saltwater to develop. This means you never have to worry about overpopulation.

💡 Interesting Facts
- • They are famously known to be the only shrimp that will readily consume tough Black Beard Algae (BBA) when hungry.
- • Amano shrimp larvae wash out to sea in the wild, develop in the ocean, and then march back up freshwater streams as miniature adults.
- • They are known escape artists; a tight-fitting lid is mandatory, especially during their first week in a new tank.
